Research for High Schoolers

Learn about how West High Biology is both increasing transparency in science and helping young, motivated scientists get started in their careers.

Our initative aims to tackle each barrier that might prevent a student from being able to access research positions. This could include:

• Lack of positions available for high school students

• Lack of reliable means of communication with lab leadership

• Scheduling around school and other jobs.

Resources for High Schoolers Interested in Research

University of Iowa Open Research Positions

This is a great resource for those looking for experience in research labs. It can be hard to choose the right lab for you, so be on the lookout for events where we go over what labs you should target!

Regeneron Science Talent Search 

The Regeneron Science Talent Search is a foundation that offers scholarships to high school students that demonstrate exceptional skill in a science field. The student presents research and aims to be selected by the foundation for further consideration. Regeneron also sponsers the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF). Your research must be individual in order to submit to the Regeneron Scholarship. 

Those interested in individual research projects should seek a faculty advisor (either from West or UIowa) to help them and narrow their topic appropriately.
